Good Music Monday

A youngish Chet Atkins looking dapper.

For your listening pleasure: Chet Atkins and Jerry Reed doing one of the best covers of “Don’t Think Twice” ever. There are roughly 45 billion covers of this song out there in the universe from jokers on youtube to Doc Watson and Johnny Cash. There’s a whole Wikipedia section about people who have covered “Don’t Think Twice.”

Chet Atkin’s version ranks above damn near all of them. The arrangement is great, Jerry Reed’s singing is perfect for the tune, the harmonica break is blazing, but most of all Atkin’s solo is so brilliant and clean. This version was a staple of mine in college and I’d often listen to it on repeat while writing papers in the library.
